AI Is Redefining The Future Of Modern Business

January 8, 2025  |  Mark Hillary

Every decade or so there is a technological development that changes how almost every business in every industry operates. The emergence of smartphones that could be customized with apps chosen by the phone user was one of the most recent big changes. This meant that a business could launch an online service and potentially be available to hundreds of millions of people overnight.

Whether anyone would download your app was always another question, but if you were featured in the media then this model allowed your app to be immediately available all over the world. When Open AI launched their ChatGPT chatbot in November 2022 it already had over 100 million users by January 2023. That would never have been possible in the days of applications needing physical media.

It is now this ongoing interest in AI that is creating a new wave of change. AI is itself creating new opportunities for different types of business, new ways to manage traditional businesses, and the chance to find productivity that would have once been impossible. It can search for innovation.

AI is catalyzing a shift towards more agile, data-informed, and customer-centric business models while creating new demands for ethical governance and adaptation – when data starts informing automated decisions then ethics is a new consideration. The cumulative impact of these changes suggests that AI is not merely a tool but a transformative force redefining the core principles and practices of modern business.

This is the important message that all business leaders need to understand. The App Store was more than a tool. It transformed how every business could go to market. The same is true today of AI. It is not just one tool in a toolbox, it is a force that is transforming how companies operate in the 2020s. It is much more than a smart chatbot.

Some of these changes are not always obvious. Business magazines like Forbes have published many features talking about how business will be transformed by AI, but what are the articles really saying? HR can be more productive by automating employee inquiries. Customer service questions can also be automated.

The Ability To See Patterns

This is not really exciting, but there are some suggestions for changes that are important. Creating the ability to think and see patterns – imagine what this can do for a logistics business? Or spotting unusual activity on a network. Think what this can do for security and preventing unauthorized access to data? Or the ability to mine a deep library of information and then to answer any question about that data – so a company with a large number of products can use AI to find answers that are hidden deep in the database.

The Ability To Influence Operations

The integration of AI across various sectors is transforming business operations, altering everything from strategic planning to customer interactions. Companies increasingly harness AI to automate routine tasks, allowing employees to focus on more complex, creative, or high-value responsibilities. This shift has led to efficiency gains, cost savings, and improved accuracy in fields like finance, healthcare, and manufacturing – although these operational gains can apply to any industry.

The Ability To Influence Strategy

AI is impacting corporate strategy by influencing how companies approach innovation and competition. As AI systems enable rapid market analysis, trend forecasting, and competitive intelligence, businesses are better equipped to anticipate shifts in demand and respond proactively. AI-driven insights provide a competitive edge by highlighting emerging opportunities or potential threats, allowing firms to pivot swiftly and effectively.

In our current fast-moving business environment, this insight can be essential for survival. Threats and opportunities cannot be assumed to be the same tomorrow as they were yesterday.

The Ability To Find Innovation

This adaptability has led companies to adopt agile approaches to innovation, frequently experimenting with new ideas and incorporating iterative feedback. The emphasis on continual learning and adaptation aligns with AI’s evolving capabilities, encouraging businesses to foster a culture that embraces technological change and invests in upskilling employees. In most cases, AI is not replacing people, it is enhancing what they can do – it boosts their productivity.

AI is creating more insight and more agility. It is possible for companies to see patterns in customer behavior, to see how their own business processes need to evolve. It is driving a new wave of innovation because it is handling many of the repetitive tasks that skilled humans are currently focused on.

After PCs, email, social media, and the app store, we now have the latest wave of business change driven by technology and it is all powered by AI.
